Blog: Next New

A new type of new media that I thought about would be augmented virtual reality. I understand that virtual reality already exist, but it is not in practical use. As far as I know, none of my friends use it and I find it hard to believe that people use it in a daily basis.  Uses for virtual reality can greatly improve from how they are used now. Instead of creating your own character or avatar, maybe there can be a full body scan so you can be yourself in the reality world. Also, instead of having to actually walk or hold controllers to move, maybe you can use your brain to move using some sort of head gear. My understanding of new media is that part of the definition is information being sent at a very fast rate. Instead of just relying on television or letters, people can interact from anywhere using a code that will allow them to interact in a virtual room. This will destroy the bridge of the time it takes to send messages via email or social media (Usually determined by yo...

Blog: Wiki So Far

Though I have not worked on the wiki yet or contributed to any of the pages, I know that I will be adding to the economics portion of the wikipedia. I saw that there are already information about how social media effects the economy and the use or bitcoin, but I did not see anyone talk about current websites that provide real time data. One of the big differences between new media and old media is the speed of information being processed and distributed to the viewers. We already know of existing companies that take advantage of real-time news and data such as Bloomberg and virtually any news outlet. The importance of real-time data for the markets and the economy will effect the decisions of traders, big or small, around the world. People who not only invest in domestic fixed income or equities but international as well. Getting information the fastest and most accurate is what sets these new outlets apart. For my contribution, I will be going more into detail about different new...

Blog: P2P

Create a new post on your blog with the above title. In your post, cite at least one of the assigned readings and answer the following questions: What is file sharing? What is P2P File sharing? What are some examples of P2P file sharing? You must cite at least one of the assigned readings. File sharing is defined as being able to offer access to different sets of data at different levels of sharing privilege. An example of this would be sharing a google docs file with giving the person you are sharing with very limited access to the file.  P2p File sharing seems to have the same concept as file sharing, but getting the information or access to different data seems to be a little more technical. As I read more about P2P file sharing, I learned that if you have a computer and want access to a file, you have software that can connect to different computers and search for the data that you need. This will work especially well within a company because all computers are connected ...

Blog: Privacy

I've always learned that what you put online will never go away and will haunt you forever. As we move more into a technological age, confidentiality and privacy will become even more important. What you post online and what you have on your computer is essentially data that you do not want to get leaked. As people have more of an online presence, I believe that it is easier for someone to target you and to steal your information. According to an article by the Washington Post, the University of Maryland had a security breach where over 300,000 identities were exposed to hackers. This is something that should not have happened especially with the security that any university has. It is scary to consider the capabilities of these hackers and the possibility of someone stealing your information that you have on the internet. Examples of new media has to do with social media platforms as well and not being able to guarantee that your information stays safe is actually very scary. Id...

Blog: Advice

You are hired by Baruch College to use  new media  to improve the College. What are some suggestions you would make using new media? Some suggestions I would make using new media to improve Baruch College would be making different social media platforms in order the bring the school together. As you all may know, Baruch has many different clubs and organizations. In order to bring the different organizations and clubs together, maybe a social media platform where everyone can connect is a good idea. Aside from this and moving onto the learning perspective, I believe that school can use different streaming services in order to improve the classroom experience. Rather than having everyone in a zoom call, professors can stream their classes which will probably make classes a little more structured and give students the opportunity to have a better experience. I don't really like zoom itself and would prefer to watch lectures through a streaming service.

Creativity and New Media

Image
I'd like you to show me how new media fosters creativity by creating an example. This assignment is up to your imagination. Whether you want to create a YouTube video or show me snapshots of an avatar in Second Life that you created, I will leave the definition of "creativity and new media" up to you, and let you surprise me. To get credit for this assignment you must post a blog entry with the above title and explain exactly what you did using new media tools and display it either with screenshots or by providing a url in your blog. Note: This assignment is flexible, just be creative :) The avatar that I decided to make was a snapchat bitmoji. This was a very cool little project for me because I remember seeing how everyone on my snapchat list had a little avatar that looked like them. At first, I didn't really think much of it. I thought it was creative but was never driven to make my own. I decided to do this for my blog since it gave me a good reason to create o...

HW Creativity

Create a new post on your blog with the above title. In your post, cite at least one of the assigned readings and discuss how new media fosters creativity. Media fosters creativity in the way where you get ideas from everywhere. Rather than having to come up with an idea or think about how to expand on an idea by yourself, you are left with a vast ocean of different places where you can get help. A prime example is an article called "How use-generated content can improve your social media marketing strategy", by Lisa Mulcahy. She talks about a company trying to reach to new and existing customers and the way they decides to market their brand is to let customers be a part of the strategy. On social media, they told their customers to give them honest reviews about the company and product in order to give the customers the "truth" they seek. This will give them a better idea for what they may have a weaknesses in and build that weakness. It is very hard for a norma...

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds are the future of entertainment and interaction. As mention in the Forbes article, "After Second Life, Can Virtual Worlds Get a Reboot?" stated that 2 billion users worldwide with 1 billion of those accounts being kids ages 5-15. It is especially popular with kids because it can foster creativity and a create an environment where their parents have no bounds. The different ways you can use virtual words are limitless. Some examples include, rehabilitation, hang out areas, games, etc.  A fter reading the two articles I really believe that the pros outweigh the cons. According to the NY times article "Iv Been in That Club, Just Not in Real Life" the author wanted to go to a cafe to see a band, but once there she was disgusted with her experience so she left. She went home and rejoined the show but virtually. This is one of the pros that I wanted to discuss and it related to the current pandemic times. Now that people will be well aware of the risks and ...

Blog: Social networking sites

Below I will begin to compare four social media websites. Facebook: Facebook is actually my main social media. I like to use Facebook as a messaging platform because the messenger aspect is very convenient. You can make group chats and reach out to different people in a very easy manner. Facebook's main application is also very interesting. I currently buy and sell shoes and sell them for profits and one of the platforms I use to sell is facebook. They have different groups and marketplaces that can be used to sell your items. You would think that the group pages would be run very poorly with no regulations but it is the opposite. Group owners try to maintain integrity and remove anyone who seems suspicious. I also use Facebook as a means to relieve my boredom. There are always different videos to watch on Facebook and I really like how the Facebook algorithm recognizes what you enjoy watching and gives you similar videos. Overall, Facebook is a great platform that has everything y...

How does a Twitter discussion compare to a BlackBoard Discussion? To an in-class discussion?

I believe that people are willing to use Twitter rather than Blackboard as a means to do an in-class discussion. With the way twitter is formatted, people can easily retweet, and comment on each others post. Blackboard is very inefficient because you have to go back and forth in order to reply to someone's comment. Twitter also has another function which shows you tweets that you might be interested in and there are articles that are very interesting. Overall, I think that twitter should be used as a primary means for in-class discussions because of its efficiency and reliability.

Blog Social Networking

Social media technology has become a primary form of communication in the modern day. Not only do we use it to communicate and share with family and friends, but it has now become a primary resource for the corporate world. For example, LinkedIn has become the leading business network social media platform. There, working individuals are able to create a resume like profile with past work experience, education and even interests. According to NPR's "Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting" article professional recruiters have now started to hunt for candidates through platforms such as LinkedIn. Maureen Crawford-Hentz, a recruiter for Osram Sylvania was able to find a potential candidate for a marketing manager by searching key words and reviewing people's profiles in order to reach out. This creates a fast and efficient way to recruit for both potential employees and recruiters. On the other hand, putting not only your personal information on casual soci...

BLOG: Blog v Wiki

Create a new post on your blog with the above title. In your post, answer the following questions. Compare and contrast blogs and wikis. Comment on the importance of convergence in today's networked world. How can blogs be used for collaboration? Can you think of a new use for a wiki that has not been done yet? Cite at least 2 readings relating to Blogs and/or Wikis The difference between a blog and a wiki is that a blog is a blog is created and updated by a person or business while a wiki is basically an open library. Unlike a wiki, a blog is updated so that it tailors to what the person or business has in mind. The wiki is exponentially different in the aspect where anyone can update the information to what they like. It is a collaborative library where the information can take any turn. It does not follow the morals of a business or a person. A blog is also very opinionated. For example, if you were to be writing a blog about a company that you work for, the blog will most lik...

Project Description

Hi Everyone welcome to my Blog Post. My paper will be on e-bay. If you guys didn't know, e-Bay is looking to expand its online marketplace into different markets. One example happens to be the shoe market. E-bay is looking to accommodate sellers on e-bay by having no seller fees which saves a lot of money if you continuously sell on their platform. My paper will basically talk about the different ways that e-bay is trying to expand their business from improving their payment services to lowering fees for sellers.
