Blog: Next New

A new type of new media that I thought about would be augmented virtual reality. I understand that virtual reality already exist, but it is not in practical use. As far as I know, none of my friends use it and I find it hard to believe that people use it in a daily basis.

Uses for virtual reality can greatly improve from how they are used now. Instead of creating your own character or avatar, maybe there can be a full body scan so you can be yourself in the reality world. Also, instead of having to actually walk or hold controllers to move, maybe you can use your brain to move using some sort of head gear. My understanding of new media is that part of the definition is information being sent at a very fast rate. Instead of just relying on television or letters, people can interact from anywhere using a code that will allow them to interact in a virtual room. This will destroy the bridge of the time it takes to send messages via email or social media (Usually determined by your internet speed). There will be no delay in relaying messages or news.

  1. Nice example of virtual reality, I am also not aware of many people using virtual reality, other than being used in video games. Amazon and few other big technology companies, have already started accepting virtual reality has a new media, these websites have started offering a way for us to see their product in virtual reality and see how these product would look in our rooms or whatever we plan on using it for, but great example of virtual reality.

  2. Hey I really like the application you have stated for virtual reality. I also think it would be great for distance learning as well. If we can recreate classes virtually, it would greatly increase the discussion and collaboration. Zoom is good but it just doesn't feel like classroom and bonding with classmates is borderline impossible. I believe virtual reality is the best option when it comes to distance learning.
